Shift Register Unit, Driving Method Thereof, Display Substrate And Display Marks a Pause Worth Noticing
A tiny display-circuit filing suggests that BOE's surge in panel volume has not settled its harder premium OLED fight.

What changes in this design
A reader might picture a display as a single piece that simply receives electricity and shows an image, without considering the smaller circuits inside it.
This record focuses on one internal circuit unit. It divides the work among node-control, pull-down, and output sections, which send signals to two internal points and an output connection.
It helps explain that a display-related device can depend on carefully controlled internal electrical signals, not only the visible screen. Performance, speed, and visual quality are not stated.
The cracked iPhone panels
In April 2026, I found BOE had regained approval to mass-produce OLED panels for the iPhone 17 after substrate cracks stopped production. Shipments were to restart in May, and defective panels were scrapped. It is a useful place to start because the episode makes the problem humanly legible: a supplier can win the order, build a line, and still lose time on a flaw that cannot be waved away.
That recovery did not settle the premium contest. A May report said BOE was excluded from the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max because its panel quality and manufacturing yield lagged on LTPO+. Its 2026 forecast gave BOE 35 million Apple OLED panels, far below the volumes forecast for the two Korean suppliers. That gap is what I take more seriously than any individual patent claim.
The royalty settlement
The new application, to me, also cannot be read apart from November 2025, when BOE agreed to pay Samsung Display royalties and ended the roughly three-year patent fight. Reporting said a 14-year, eight-month import ban had been on the table before the settlement. That is not a side plot. It tells me BOE's engineering drive operates under patents that another major supplier can still enforce.
Then the business numbers complicate any victory lap. In the first half of 2026, flexible OLED smartphone shipments rose 15.6% to 350 million. BOE shipped 81.4 million, or 23.3%, while Samsung Display shipped about 120 million. Yet Q1 estimates diverged: one put smartphone OLED shipments at 190 million, down 12%; another put AMOLED at about 210 million, down 0.7%. Different measures are why I won't flatten them into one clean story.
A lower voltage
That is where US20260253656A1 enters. I see it as a piece of factory-bound work, not a headline invention. Published on August 27, 2026, from an application filed May 21, 2024, it covers a shift register unit and its use in display driving. The claim that stands out gives the pull-down sub-circuit's third power-supply signal a lower absolute voltage than its second power-supply signal. That is a narrow electrical relationship, but it belongs to timing circuitry used to drive a display.
An earlier group filing that I went back to makes the surrounding pressure clearer. It described OLED external compensation needing a display scan and a blank-phase scan, with two large output transistors getting in the way of high resolution and narrow frames. This publication alone doesn't tell me how much bezel area or cost the new voltage arrangement saves in a shipping panel. The publication, however, does show me a sustained effort to make gate-driver circuitry do more without simply enlarging the hardware.
Two gate-driver routes
A second 2026 BOE filing struck me as more explicit about the same design squeeze. It says a P-type LTPS gate driver normally ties output polarity to transistor type, even as oxide N-type pixel circuits spread. Its answer keeps all-P-type units and changes clock configuration to decouple that polarity. The published alternatives range from 9T3C to 13T3C. The pair reads to me as parallel routes, not proof that either has reached a phone.
That distinction matters. A patent can show where engineers are spending attention, while a product qualification shows whether the work survives yield, reliability, and customer standards. The iPhone setback is why I resist treating a clever gate-driver circuit as a ticket into the top tier. It is evidence of technical direction, not a receipt for commercial success.
The part worth watching
Volume gives the work a larger stage for me. BOE ranked first in total smartphone panels, including LCD, at 280 million units and 25.2% share, according to the same shipment reporting. On June 17, its Chengdu 8.6-generation AMOLED plant began mass production, targeting about 10 million panels in 2026. The line is built for tandem-stack OLED on an LTPO backplane, with up to 240Hz refresh, and began with 14-inch laptop panels.
By the end of 2025, reporting put BOE's cumulative independent patent applications above 100,000 and placed it 13th worldwide for U.S. patent grants. The important question isn't, I think, whether this particular voltage relationship becomes a slogan. A harder connection is what I'll watch for: evidence that circuit work such as this is paired with durable LTPO+ quality and yield in premium products. Until then, the filing is evidence of pressure and persistence, not proof that the premium gap has closed.
